Was begegnet euch dort? Gibt es neue Architekturen, Stadträume, Orte, … Wonach riecht und schmeckt es? Denkt frei und visionär!

MASTER THESIS. WESTLAND. SUSTAINABLE ALTERNATIVES FOR THE GLASS CITY

The graduate studio „Westland. Sustainable Alternatives for the Glass City“ explored visions, strategies and transformative spatial interventions for the sustainable urbanization of the largest horticulture production center in the Netherlands. Radical technological changes and shifts in production processes resulted in an unprecedented productive cluster that conditions both the spatial character and social dynamics in Westland. After a short excursion, the students thoroughly analyzed the area taking into consideration the spatial limitations as well as economic, social and environmental challenges. Students later proposed solutions and experimented with multi-functional prototypes that integrated and synthesized horticultural production with residential and commercial premises.

URBAN ANALYTICS SEMINAR

„Urban Analytics+“ provides basic introduction to spatial data collection, analysis and visualization for urban planners and architects. The winter semester 2019 edition of the seminar was held as a collaboration between ISU and 300000km/s, where the students explored the city of Berlin from the perspective of „Livability“ and its correlation to transit networks.

The students learned the basics of QGIS in two workshops, and implemented their newly gained skills to highlight different factors that contribute to livability using open-source data sets and coherent data visualization techniques.

URBAN DISASTER SEMINAR

ISU’s Urban Disaster Studio focused on disaster preparedness, resilience, and reduction as well as strategies and methods to reconstruct the built environment in preparation for future disasters. Students gained a clearer understanding of issues in disaster prone areas and acquire theoretical knowledge on disaster resilience and reconstruction, as well as explored further case studies from across the world.

WORLD=CITY=VISION

HELLO + WELCOME to the digital RUNDGANG 2020!

First of all take a look at who we actually are – and what we do:

Team + Video

We would like to give you an overview of a selection of students’ projects from the past two semesters: from the „städtebauliches Projekt“ of the 3rd semester, to seminars for students of all semesters and also interdisciplinary, to the master thesis – there is something exciting for everyone!

You can also find links to some of our research projects – from Diepholz to China!

WE WOULD BE VERY HAPPY TO SEE YOU AGAIN SOON IN PERSONA AT ISU!

Until then – have fun with our virtual tour 2020!

STÄDTEBAULICHES PROJEKT (SP)

The “urban design project” takes place every winter semester at ISU and ISE and is addressed to students in the 3rd semester. After two theoretical semesters with lectures on urban planning the SP is much more practical and the students can devote their attention to a concrete design task on an urban planning scale. Last years task we decided a bit on a different task: We worked on a fictitious city, to which we only gave a few basic parameters. This allowed the students to experiment with typologies, sustainable strategies, a different far and various uses.

The first big design – super exciting!

STEGREIF

In 30 years, 70% of the world’s population will live in cities and / or urban regions. For many people, these places to live can offer better access to work, education and public infrastructure, to highly networked communities and a wide variety of life styles!

To achieve this, the designers of tomorrow are needed, i.e. YOU:
For a weekend you will have the privilege of immersing yourself in one of these future cities! What does it look like there? What do you encounter there? Are there new architectures, urban spaces, places, … What does it smell and taste like? Think free and visionary!

MASTER ENTWURF WORLD=CITY= VISION

If only we had the opportunity to imagine the city of the future, one which is prospering socially and economically, is addressing the majority of people on this planet, resource-saving and environmentally friendly?

What urban planning and architectural concepts will enable this lovable, inclusive, socially just and environmentally compatible city? What do architecture and urban spaces look like? Where do people meet, how do they work, how do they live?

On the urban design scale the students approached flexible frameworks that accommodate urban growth, environmental and socioeconomic alterations. On the architecture scale they conceived carefully curated synchronicity between uses of spaces, programs and morphologies.
